Dude... is it roll-and-write if you don't WRITE?
Didn’t expect such a thought-provoking question, did you now? Haha.
I certainly didn’t. But one of you folks asked me this after I published my recent issue on Rooftop Roses. And it got me thinking.
Then I thought… why should I digest it alone? :P
For those who don’t know, you can reply directly to any of my newsletter issues if there’s something you want to ask me. And turns out, a few of you have!
So I thought I’d address a few of these queries in this issue:
#1: Is it roll-and-write if you don’t WRITE?
Plenty of games we know as roll-and-writes don’t involve much writing at all.
In Rooftop Roses, for example, you’re marking (planting) roses in your garden, along with marking the scores for the rows and columns you water. Other roll-and-writes might have you color spaces, draw routes, fill boxes, circle symbols, etc.
So... shouldn’t they be called roll-and-draws?!
Technically, that might be more accurate. But roll-and-write has grown into an umbrella term for games where you roll dice and mark something on your sheet, whether you’re writing numbers or drawing tiny flowers.
Besides, I don’t think anyone’s writing paragraphs after rolling a six... right?
My verdict? Roll-and-draw technically works, but I don’t see it replacing roll-and-write.
Still, something to think about the next time you play a roll-and-write!
#2: Wait... how do late pledges work?
Since plenty of the games I play are part of crowdfunding campaigns, I’ve gotten a decent number of queries about late pledges and how they work.
Even after a successful campaign has ended, you may still get a chance to back it through late pledges. You’ll see this option on both Kickstarter and Gamefound.
How long that opportunity remains available depends on the campaign. Some creators offer a fixed window, while others leave it open until they’re ready to move on to fulfilment. The available rewards and prices can sometimes differ too, so it’s always worth checking the campaign page properly.
Right now, there’s one gem open for late pledges that’s absolutely worth checking out, and it’s Roll 4 MORE Rum on Gamefound.

#3: Okay... but what other tracks do you listen to?
After one of my recent posts on listening to music while playing, a couple of you asked what I personally listen to besides the music pack I highlighted.
Other than tracks from a few bands I’ve been following for ages (Linkin Park!), I’ve really enjoyed playing games with lo-fi Lord of the Rings tracks in the background.
I’m a massive LOTR fan, so that probably surprises absolutely no one. Hearing those familiar melodies softened into lo-fi tracks makes almost any session feel like the beginning of an adventure. <3
