I find itch.io thoroughly underrated.

Itch has already introduced me to tons of print-and-plays, and it's also where I discovered the album of loopable 16-bit tracks featured in one of my newsletter issues. They’re tracks I often have in my headphones while playing. And now, Itch has led me to an event built around single-page RPGs.

The One-Page RPG Jam 2026 challenges designers to create a fully playable RPG on a single sheet of paper. The jam is now in its sixth year, and submissions are open until August 16. And this year’s optional theme is “Fractured,” although designers are free to ignore it and take their games in a completely different direction.

This jam has no rankings or judges involved, by the way. Participants simply create their games during the jam period and add them to its growing collection of submissions. Games can be released for free, offered as pay-what-you-want, or given a fixed price. Designers can even submit more than one game. Quite flexible!

You can participate by designing a one-page RPG of your own, but you certainly do not need to be a designer to enjoy the jam. Anyone can browse its submissions and find new games to play. And there's one that caught my eye!

Among the submissions, a game that has certainly piqued my interest is The Walden Paradox by Exeunt Press.

It is a solo journaling RPG in which you play as Henry David Thoreau during his final months at Walden Pond, from May 1846 to September 1847. Each month, a new visitor arrives. You converse with them, pay attention to anything peculiar, look for signs of time paradoxes, and record what happens in your journal.

Your stay ends when you encounter your sixth time paradox or reach September 1847, whichever happens first. You then finish the experience by writing a final letter to your friend, Ralph Waldo Emerson.

This... is super unique!

Historical journaling already makes for an unusual setup, but introducing visitors and possible disruptions to time makes me particularly curious about where those journal entries might lead. The complete game is presented as an A4 trifold, fitting everything neatly onto a single page.

The Walden Paradox is listed at $5 or more, but those participating in this year’s One-Page RPG Jam can scroll down its Itch page and claim a FREE community copy.

These copies are limited, so it's worth claiming one while they are still available. Otherwise, you can explore the jam’s growing list of submissions whether you plan to create a game yourself or simply want new RPGs to play.

Itch, you are indeed a platform that keeps giving! Tip of the hat to you, ser.
