The Many Lives of Solitaire
From PC to playing cards to a dungeon crawl

On a random afternoon back in 2005, I remember sitting in front of a bulky PC screen, clicking through a built-in game on my Windows XP without thinking too much about it..
Cards stacked, flipped, moved. Red on black. Black on red.
A simple rhythm that had something to do with sequencing cards that felt really catchy.
I did not know it then, but that was my first real introduction to solitaire.
Years later, around 2010, it found its way back to me. This time, not on a screen, but through an actual deck of cards.
No animations. No hints. Just me, the table, and the patience it demanded. It felt slower than playing on PC, but it was definitely a more up-close experience.
And then, 16 years later, I found myself returning to it again. Only this time, it was something else entirely.
Cueing in: Cavern Shuffle!

The game still carries the bones of what I remember. Seven piles. Hidden cards waiting to be revealed. That same careful sequencing.
But the moment you begin, you feel the shift.
Those piles stop being piles. They start to feel like corridors.
Each card you uncover is not just a number anymore. It is something. An adventurer. An obstacle. An item. An enemy waiting for you to deal with it.
And you are not just organizing cards. You are building a party!
Every move feeds into that. Your adventurers grow stronger, and their combined strength becomes the only way forward. Some paths stay blocked until you are ready. Some challenges ask for the right character, not just the right number.
And just when you feel in control, the game pushes back. There is a presence moving across your board. Slowly. Locking spaces. The boss enemy, Minotaur!
That similar flow of solitaire is still there. But with the inclusion of adventurers, obstacles, items, and the enemies, now you know that there's much more in hand to save the day. The game no longer hinges towards how good the card shuffle is, at least not as much as it used to.
Courtesy of the first edition of Cavern Shuffle (Maze of Minotaur), I'm glad to have solitaire back on my table after over a decade. To add more to my joy, Cavern Shuffle is now back on Kickstarter with two new editions.
One pulls you deeper into darkness, where the enemies you defeat return as part of the Lich’s growing army, each one scaling as you push forward, all leading up to a final encounter with the Lich. The other takes you somewhere unfamiliar, onto a newly terraformed planet, introducing new mechanics like Infection and Specimen as you deal with a rogue machine that no longer follows its purpose.
Same foundation. More elements. More fun!
