I owe Pocketopia an apology

Missed a BIG game event last year. Not this time.

Ever get the feeling you missed out on something big?

That was me last year with Pocketopia. And I feel like I owe it an apology…

I did not skip it because it looked uninteresting. Quite the opposite. I was just too deep into the madness of Micro May, trying out nine new games and barely keeping up with the flood of fresh print-and-play goodness coming through. New ideas everywhere, campaigns popping up left and right, game files hitting the printer before the previous lot had even visited the table twice.

Somewhere in that chaos, Pocketopia slipped right past me. But this time, I want to do better.

Pocketopia, for those unfamiliar, is BackerKit’s celebration of compact tabletop games. Small boxes, quick setups, and still plenty of room for clever design to shine. Annnnd... there’s print-and-play games too!

It runs from May 7 to May 28, and I have a feeling I’ll be paying much closer attention this year. Part of the reason is that I already know one game there has my interest. Kudos to its creator, Dylan.

Dylan Coyle is one of my favorite game designers to keep tabs on. His games tend to pull you in with charm first, then slowly show their teeth once you start playing.

Otter looked adorable, then hit me with far more tactical depth than expected.

Doom Cat brought spooky chaos, clever decisions, and one of my favorite Halloween gaming sessions in recent memory.

Now comes Red Panda Surprise, a fast card game where red pandas try scaring each other while somehow remaining too cute to fear. Which, honestly, sounds like a very Dylan Coyle thing to make!

So yes, Pocketopia has my attention this year.

And if you missed it before like I did, maybe this is the year to change that too?
