Excited for this Visual Playthrough, because I’ll be taking on dual roles in this game.
All three of us, in fact.
I’m playing Dragon vs Kingdom's 2nd edition with two of my friends, and of course, the all-important decision is naming my dragon.
How’s... Tas?
Duh. Tas the Living Inferno!
For this Visual Playthrough, we’re going with one of the nine possible Dragon-Kingdom combinations in the game: Hatchling Swarm X The Barracks.
So instead of one big dragon, we're dealing with fiery little baby dragons. And with The Barracks in play, the kingdom side gets Towers, Catapults, and Armories to work with.
Something tells me these baby dragons are going to be feisty!

And since Dragon vs Kingdom is a pass-and-play, the game starts with a pass.
Everyone keeps their scoring sheet. The map sheets move around the table.
Which means the sheet with my dragon’s name goes away, and a new kingdom lands in front of me.

The game begins with all of us in the Builder phase.
I’m getting the sheet from the player to my right, Mak. At this point, the map is completely blank. Not for long.
Time to draw some settlements!
With The Barracks, I can build three types of structures: Tower, Catapult, and Armory.
A Tower scores 2 points when built, and later gives me a distance-based attack against dragons.
A Catapult scores 1 point when built, and later gives me a stronger straight-line attack.
An Armory can be attached to a Tower or Catapult. If I connect it to my own structure, I score 2 points. If I connect it to an opponent’s structure, I score 4 points. But there’s a tradeoff. That structure becomes better for my opponent's future attacks because the Armory allows a reroll.

On my first Builder turn, I have 2 energy, so I can build two structures.
I’m starting with a Tower for 2 points, then adding a Catapult for 1 point.
That gives me 3 points right away.
But I’m also thinking ahead here. These are not just points, they are future attack options. The Tower gives me a flexible attack angle, while the Catapult can be a badass if a dragon ends up in the Catapult’s line of fire.
I’m also keeping them a bit far from each other. Because if those baby dragons start flying around later, I don’t want them burning through my structures in one go.

Time to pass them sheets again.

Now I have Smaug’s sheet in front of me, aka Imran’s dragon sheet.
Mak has already left her mark here with a Tower and a Catapult. Copycat much?
She’s placed them pretty close to each other though, which might become a problem later. The closer structures are, the easier it can be for dragons to burn through them in one go.
Welp, her problem, not mine. ;)
For this Builder turn, I’m building one more Tower and enjoying a bit of Opponent Parasitism by adding an Armory.
The Tower gives me 2 points, while my Armory next to Mak’s Tower gives me 4 points because I’m connecting it to an opponent’s structure. Wohoo!
Of course, that also means Mak’s Tower now gets the Armory reroll whenever she uses it to attack dragons later. Ah, well... something I can live with. Hopefully?
I’m also placing my Tower a bit away from the nearby structures. With Hatchling Swarm, there are going to be multiple baby dragons entering the map, and I’d rather not make things too convenient for them…

And we pass again.
Time to breathe fire!

My dragon sheet is finally circling back to me, which means the Builder is taking a backseat.
It’s time to be Tas the Living Inferno. Or maybe Tas the Baby Infernos?
Because with Hatchling Swarm, I’ll eventually have four hatchlings to work with.
For this Dragon phase, I can summon two of them. Each Hatchling gets 2 energy, so choosing where they enter from is a big deal.

Where do them babies enter from?
I’m picking two entry points that give me access to structures I can start toasting right away.
So I’m attacking from two fronts!
That is the fun thing with Hatchling Swarm. I’m not controlling one big dragon moving through the map. I’m basically spreading the chaos. One Hatchling can pressure one side, while another starts causing trouble somewhere else.
With each Hatchling, I want to do two things: destroy something useful, and end in a position where the Builders cannot punish me too easily on their next turns.
How about burning 2 Towers to a crisp while also dodging any possible counterattack?

Making both baby dragons move a few spaces, dive, destroy, and move again. Like a fiery little orchestra!
That gives me 4 points from burning the two Towers. Not bad for two baby dragons just entering the map.
And that concludes the round.
From a blank sheet where I’m starting to place my settlements, to another map where I’m capitalizing on my opponent’s structure, to finally becoming the firebreather and destroying what others have built, this one round already shows the range Dragon vs Kingdom has.
And the next rounds should get even more intense. More structures will hit the map. More Hatchlings will join the chaos. And eventually, I’ll have to start attacking the dragons that dared mess with my structures.
